Collective Responsibility in Conservation
At Matlabas Custodians, we believe in the power of collective responsibility when it comes to conservation. The Matlabas Conservation Initiative is a testament to our commitment to preserving the Western Waterberg's unique biodiversity and ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come. Proudly representing private rhino owners in the Western Waterberg area, we are entrusted with the conservation of some of the world's most remarkable wildlife populations.

Importance of Community Involvement
Conservation is not a solitary endeavor — it's a shared responsibility. The environment we leave behind for our children is a reflection of our values and actions. We believe in empowering the community to actively participate in conservation efforts, ensuring that we leave a positive legacy for future generations. Our commitment goes beyond the preservation of wildlife; it extends to shaping a sustainable and harmonious coexistence between our community and the natural world. We actively engage and involve the local community, recognizing that their participation is key to the success of our conservation efforts. Through educational programs, community outreach, and collaborative initiatives, we empower residents to be stewards of their own environment.

Join us in this collective responsibility — a commitment to leaving a lasting impact on the Western Waterberg's natural heritage.

Our Goal: Preserving the Western Waterberg
At the core of the Matlabas Conservation Initiative lies a profound dedication to the preservation and enhancement of the Western Waterberg's precious wildlife and environment. Our overarching goal is to safeguard endangered species, empower private landowners, and secure the long-term survival of extraordinary wildlife populations.
Conservation Goal #1
Preservation of Rhino Population:
Our primary goal is the protection and preservation of the rhino population in the Western Waterberg area. Through active monitoring, anti-poaching initiatives, and habitat preservation, we strive to secure the long-term survival of this magnificent species.

Conservation Goal #2
Biodiversity and Habitat Sustainability
The Matlabas Conservation Initiative is dedicated to fostering biodiversity and ensuring the sustainability of wildlife habitats. By addressing environmental challenges and promoting responsible land management, we create a thriving ecosystem for a variety of species. Our focus extends beyond the immediate conservation of wildlife; it encompasses the broader mission of ensuring the flourishing of the entire ecosystem.
Conservation Goal #3
Empowering Landowners
To achieve our objective, we empower private landowners in our area through the strategic implementation of cutting-edge technology and innovative conservation methods. By providing the tools and knowledge needed, we create a collective force dedicated to the preservation of our natural heritage.

Conservation Goal #4
Opposing Mining Activities
There are currently several environmental impact studies being conducted by prospective mines in our area. We are opposing these mines in areas identified for conservation.
In line with our commitment to sustainability, we actively support landowners in opposing mining activities within the critical areas of our conservation endeavors.
Our environment is not just a mere landscape, but a precious treasure that holds immense value for all of us. It is a sanctuary of pristine nature, a harbor of breathtaking beauty, and a source of endless inspiration. Supporting our environment is not only an act of responsibility but also a wise investment in our legacy and the inheritance of future generations.
We have a duty to be good stewards of this unique gift, not only for ourselves but for the harmony and balance of the entire ecosystem. Together, we can make a difference. By protecting our environment, we support ourselves and the prosperity of our community.
Diverse Conservation
Our responsibility extends beyond rhinos. Within the confines of the Matlabas conservation area, we actively contribute to the preservation of:

#1 DREAM Network Project: Protecting Rhinos in Their Natural Habitat

The DREAM (Direct Rhino Event Alert Monitoring) Network Project embodies our commitment to keeping rhinos in protected areas within their natural habitat, ensuring they thrive in their natural state, complete with their horns. While our primary goal is the preservation of these majestic animals, unfortunate instances may necessitate heart-wrenching decisions to protect their lives.

Key Objectives:
-
Trackable Monitors: Our vision involves fitting all adult rhinos with trackable monitors.
-
Early Warning Network: Creating a dedicated network that provides early warnings in case of sudden changes in rhino behavior.
-
Swift Prototeam Response: Enhancing the response time of our Prototeam to incidents, increasing the likelihood of preventing poaching and apprehending poachers.

Ensuring Safety Through Collaboration:
-
Comprehensive Infrastructure: Leveraging our existing infrastructure, intelligence network, and ground teams.
-
Community Engagement: Collaborating with Matlabas Plaaswag, a community farmwatch with approximately 500 members, working in cooperation with SAPS to establish visible policing.
-
Private ANPR Camera Network: Through Matlabas Protection Connection, we boast the largest private Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera network in Limpopo and Northwest, comprising approximately 300 cameras.

Making Waterberg the Safest Haven for Rhinos: In collaboration with other stakeholders in the area, our goal is to establish the Waterberg as the safest haven for rhinos in South Africa. This involves preventing perpetrators from reaching their goals and ensuring that, if they do, they will not get away with it.

Proto-Team: Unsung Heroes in Action:
-
Community Involvement: The Proto-Team comprises community members volunteering their time and energy in emergency situations.
-
Multi-Disciplinary Training: Trained in various disciplines, including law, tracking, and first aid, the Proto-Team plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety of our rhinos.
